Should You Move Out of Your Home During a Roof Replacement?

It usually takes a few days to replace the roof of an average-sized, single-family home. The job means that multiple people will be walking around the top of your house. Expect that there will be a lot of construction, noise and mess.

Consider these things before deciding on staying in your home during a roof replacement

Children

Let your kids know that your roof is going to be replaced and give rules for the time being. Assign safe spaces in your home where they can stay or play. Make sure that they don’t go outside unless the job is done because debris can fall from every side of your house. It’s dangerous to have children running around below it.

Pets

It’s best to remove or secure your pets during the construction. The roofing job can be distressing for them and you don’t know how they will react to the workers. You may also keep them in a quiet room or a basement where they won’t hear much of the noise.

Landscaping

Your roofing contractor will protect your landscape by laying tarps to catch any debris. Someone also usually walks around with a magnet to catch any stray nails. We recommend keeping your outdoor furniture, grills, or valuables inside your home. You can also add additional tarps on parts of your landscaping that you want especially protected.

Vehicles

It’s best to park your car away from your house while the roofers are working on your roof. As much as you can, don’t park it in the driveway because falling debris can hit it. In the garage, the construction can cause tools to fall from the walls and accidentally fall on your car.
